Demon Hunter Melee Weapon: the Whip - Page 2

For a true 3D engine, whips, flails, or other string like weapons are freaking ridiculously complex. It's kind of funny; ball in a cup (w/ a string on it) is easy enough to figure out for a child to do. However, try to make a computer play it, and it's damn near impossibly complex. So I wouldn't worry about whips any time soon.

Aww I was hoping there would be a flail for the barb like in the steroidally-muscled barbarian concept art - it looks so awesomely badass|||I think the concept of knives/dagger would fit the DH perfectly, he/she can use those for melee.|||IMO any melee that the DH uses should come from a Skill as opposed to actually equipping an item. Like the throwing knives are a skill.|||Quote:

What makes you say that,I dont imagine them being that complex depends how accurate it needs to be but since theres a lot going on with skills and skill runes I dont see it being a challenge to achieve. Its the end result that counts how the weapon looks and feels even if underneath its not totally accurate.|||Quote:

there is very little about a whip or chain that cant be simulated to a quality needed for a game engine , especially when the camera is 10s of meters above the actor.

bear in mind i stress "simulated" complex collisions , elasticity , friction , weight are just not needed .|||Thw whip is not a 100% melee weapon. You can't attack targets that are close to you... you need some space/distance to use it. So it's more like a short range missle weapon... but not realy

Would fit the DH tough!|||First let me say that I didn't bother reading thru the whole thread to see if any of this was mentioned...but I have mentioned my desire to see whips as a "ranged-melee" weapon before. I am only posting this because Flux and team asks for we "whip-o-philes" (not a quote) to post our support for the idea...thus here I am.

I think the idea is rather intriguing, especially if each whip can come with "enchantments" that add elemental/arcane damage mods.

Of course speed is crucial to make it worthwhile and dual-wielding would be a MUST! Anyone who thinks "Whips...how lame!" Needs to watch Iron Man 2 (again) or remember the Balrog of Moria in the LOTR series, he used a whip made of frickin' fire! The point is that whips can be ferocious weapons if imbued with the proper energies.

I am thinking that certain castes of creatures in Sanctuary would fear the whip "naturally". Both the previous games in the series have had creatures that qualified as "beasts" and certainly they would fear the whip and respond by fleeing. I think that an appropriate mod would be: "hit causes beast to flee" or "hit causes all beasts in x radius to flee". This should be a "natural" modifier for whips, kinda like how "+ damage to undead" is a "natural" modifier for all club class weapons.

This concept really isn't that difficult to implement. Heck, it be great to see whips made out of different materials for added damage and some that were made of pure "arcane" or "elemental" energy instead of just being "enchanted" with fire, ice, lightning or arcane energy.

In my mind an "elite" whip would be one made of such energies whilst the basics were made of "leather". A decent "mid-range" would be made of some fancy metal with metal spikes/mace heads at the end...kinda like a really long "scourge".

My two cents...

PS

To the user who said "we don't need a dominatrix class". I whole-heartedly DISAGREE! The Demon Hunter just SCREAMS Dominatrix! 100% There is nothing quite as sexay (yeah I went there) as seeing a hot chick with glowing eyes, sleek armor and a couple of whips in her hands. You can't tell me you wouldn't get a buzz from hearing a few "ON YOU KNEES SLAVES!!!" from the DH every often or so as she cuts a swath thru a horde of demons! Try to deny it! (in the best of good humor)|||I agree with ZZZ, in a fantasy world such as Sanctuary whips could be a very lethal weapon. Obviously there are precedents in other fantasy worlds previously mentioned, I know Iron Man 2 was mentioned as well as LotR, and I think it was used in one of the Underworld movies.

Maybe if there aren't whip items a skill could be wrapping a bladed whip around a foe's neck, followed by decapitation (if the enemy is low on life) or heavy damage.|||I doubt there will be whips but I'm hoping for at least some nice class-specific weapon other than crossbow :c

Melee would be nice but I highly doubt it.|||Quote:

Totally agree with that... Blizzard went nearly all the way to make her a dominatrix. Why stop now? To summarize

- sexy

- leather clother

- high heels

- "bad girl"

- handcuffs (well entangling shots, but that is the same )

The only missing element is the whip to make her complete Joking a bit here, I find the all the dominatrix look a bit ridiculous, but why not doing it completely if they are going down that road.

Also, for the male version, the whip will remind us of Castlevania serie, a nice reference in terms of guys fighting demons (beside the Van Helsing reference with the crossbow).
